ANAPHORA (HỒI CHỈ/CHIẾU) (n) ANAPHORIC (adj)
Theo từ điển Longman về Giảng dạy Ngôn ngữ & Ngôn ngữ học Ứng dụng (tr.16) thì 'hồi chỉ/chiếu là một tiến trình mà một từ hoặc một ngữ nhắc lại một từ hoặc một ngữ khác mà được dùng trước đó trong một văn bản hay hội thoại. Ví dụ, trong:
Tom likes ice cream but Bill can't eat it
từ 'it' nhắc lại ice cream (kem): nó là sự thay thế ice cream (kem) mà được gọi là tiền ngữ/từ đứng trước của it.
Một số động từ có thể là hồi chỉ /chiếu, ví dụ động từ 'do' trong:
Mary works hard and so does Doris
'does' là một hồi chỉ/chiếu và thay thế cho động từ works.
(a process where a word or phrase (anaphor) refers back to another word or phrase which was used earlier in a text or conversation. For example, in:
Tom likes ice cream but Bill can't eat it
the word 'it' refers back to ice cream: it is a substitute for ice cream, which is called the ANTECEDENT of it.
Some verbs may be anaphoric, for example the verb 'do' in:
Mary works hard and so does Doris
'does' is anaphoric and is a substitute for 'works'.)
